Renowned as an international sporting and entertainment venue, the Rose Bowl in Hampshire UK, successfully stages concert events with audiences up to 35,000 and sporting matches with 20,000 fans. As part of a massive refurbishment to transform the 150 acre site into one of the best international cricket and leisure venues in the world by 2009, the Rose Bowl overhauled its IT systems to put in place a huge IP network over which to stream live cricket and other events. Not wanting any of its fans to miss a single second, whether they are in a stand or not, the venue wanted a flexible and robust way to stream live action to multiple screens.

Having researched IPTV solutions, The Rose Bowl team selected Cabletime's MediaStar Evolution range of encoders and decoders to take feeds from cameras focusing on the square, digitise the stream, and send it over the fibre optic links to the venue's Media Centre where it is then decoded and played out live on large plasma screens. Says Mike Santer, Operations Event and Leisure Manager for The Rose Bowl: "Streaming live sports action is only one of the things we can do. We can also change the format to play out content suitable for our corporate business customers or pre-load our website which lists forthcoming events at the bowl. Additionally concerts can be streamed to screens around the venue when we host events with 36,000 fans in attendance."

The MediaStar Evolution system allows The Rose Bowl administrator to configure the settings in advance so that appropriate and relevant media can be displayed to the various customers of the bowl, be it a corporate party, a wedding, a music or entertainment event, or conference and exhibition. Screens in the restaurant can even show the latest menu options or stream in live action.
